Therapy begins with establishing a trusting relationship.
A trusting relationship is the foundation for the work that we will do together. Nancy will never rush you to talk about anything you are not ready to discuss, and understands it can take time to build this kind of relationship. In the beginning, we will work on developing coping skills to help deal with feelings and thoughts that may surface. These can vary from relaxation breathing to journaling to learning how to express yourself in the most helpful way possible.
Nancy’s Approach
Nancy uses an eclectic approach to therapy, integrating a client-centered, compassionate way of being with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT looks at the way our thoughts and feelings affect our behaviors. In addition, Nancy believes that it can be important to look back at how families shape our thinking. This is done with the goal of understanding how our present functioning may have been affected and then learning new ways of relating to ourselves and others.
Therapy continues until you and Nancy feel that progress has been made and you feel you are moving forward in a positive way. There is never a closed door here. If you stop therapy but later want to return, that is always an option.
Managing Trauma
Working with trauma requires a trauma-centered approach. This means that everything that happens in therapy is guided by the fact the trauma has occurred, and it is vital to avoid anything that may cause re-traumatization. This may mean approaching that trauma carefully and gently. Making sure that you are feeling safe is essential, both in session and between sessions. This work can take time, but it can bring about hope and healing.
Virtual Counseling
Nancy currently is offering only virtual counseling, and she uses a HIPAA compliant site, Doxy.me. Virtual counseling offers the convenience of being in your home and has been shown to be helpful to many people. Nancy is currently a referral source for a physician in NJ who does Weight Loss surgery and is conducting online psychological evaluations needed for this surgery. The virtual sessions are available to anyone living in the states where Nancy is licensed which currently are New Jersey and South Carolina.
